Syrian Community Center

This was the architectural intervention for a larger academic project proposal for the resettlement of Syrian refugees to Oakland, CA. The community center would act as a place for refugees to gather and seek community and welcome others to join in a cultural dynamism of melting cultures together. The goals for this design were to foster social activity and to allow a space where history, heritage, and tradition are cultivated and strengthened. This architectural intervention would allow refugees to come together and integrate into the community and city they now live in.

I used ArcGIS to identify potential opportunity sites in Oakland for the community center based on vacant/empty lots that were near schools, healthcare, and public transportation. Placing the site in proximity to these resources is critical for the ease of resettlement of refugees.
